Anchor Text and Link Pacing in Competitive Niches

How to plan anchor mix and link speed when every competitor is buying links, and why looking at the pages that already rank comes first.

In a competitive niche, the plan around a link matters as much as the link. Two buyers can purchase similar placements and end up in very different positions because of how they chose anchors, targets and timing. This post is a planning guide, not a formula.

Start with the pages already ranking

Before choosing anything, open the backlink profiles of the pages that currently hold the positions you want. Use whatever link tool you trust and keep in mind that every tool sees only part of the web. Look at how many linking domains they have, what share of anchors are branded or generic, and how those links were added over time.

You are not copying them. You are finding out what the results you are competing against look like, so your plan does not stand out as an outlier for no reason.

The anchor types

  • Branded. Your name or your site's name. The most ordinary anchor on the web.
  • Bare URL. The address itself, often in a reference.
  • Generic. Phrases such as "read more" or "this guide".
  • Partial match. A phrase that includes the keyword inside a longer natural sentence.
  • Exact match. The keyword alone. Strong in intent and also the easiest to over-use.

Many practitioners find that a profile built mostly on exact match anchors invites attention, especially in niches where everybody is checking. A mix that leans toward branded, generic and partial anchors, with exact match used sparingly, is the more cautious approach. There is no ratio that is safe, so treat any number you read online as a rough rule of thumb and not as a threshold.

Choose targets with care

Not every link should point at the page you most want to rank. Links to supporting pages, guides and category pages can make the whole profile look more ordinary, and they can help those pages carry weight toward the money page through your own internal links. Whether that works depends on your site, so test it.

Also check that the target deserves the attention. A thin or half-finished page that suddenly gains links is a pattern worth avoiding. Improve the page first.

Pacing

Speed is a judgment call. A site that has gained very few links over years and then gains many in a week stands out. A steady rhythm that matches the size of your site and the pace of your competitors is easier to defend. Some buyers begin with one or two test placements, wait to see how they are indexed and reported, and then scale. That is slower, and slowness is the point.

Pair link activity with real activity on the site: new content, updated pages, mentions elsewhere. Links that arrive alongside other signs of life look less like a lone project.

Seasonal niches add a wrinkle. If demand peaks at a certain time of year, links placed weeks before the peak have more time to be crawled and noticed than links placed in the middle of it. Plan backward from the date that matters. Language matters too: anchors for a UK audience should read like UK English.

Keep records

Write down every placement: date, host, target URL, anchor and cost. Without records you cannot tell later which change moved anything, and you cannot answer a vendor or a reviewer if something goes wrong. Our post on measuring results shows how to set up a simple log and baseline.

Know the limits

Anchors and pacing change how a profile looks. They do not change the nature of the links. Links from a private network are a link scheme under Google's spam policies, and careful planning lowers the chance of attention without removing it. If you want to see how we plan placements, read about contextual in-post links, or send your site and niche through the request form.

Search guidelines and tactics change, and no link or plan can be promised to produce a result. Treat everything here as general education, test carefully and decide with your own risk in mind.
